Classes comprise of a structured combination of one-on-one tutoring and group teaching and other recreational activities. Our program gives the children the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and in the future.

Duties include:

  • Providing individual instruction and homework assistance to students
  • Planning daily activities for the program, including group games, fun and recreational activities
  • Demonstrating correct techniques, procedures and exercises to enhance participants’ abilities
  • Helping children to learn healthy behavior in a fun and safe environment
  • Providing participants with the opportunities to express leadership abilities and build self-esteem
  • Setting up for the program, Preparing snacks and cleaning up
  • Providing opportunities to build positive social and healthy habits
  • Supervising children during all after-school related activities

Administrative Assistant

Job Description

To assist with HSDC administrative duties, such as helping to organize special events, updating mailing lists, following-up telephone contacts, performing photocopy and faxing duties, filing, answering calls, data entry, typing, and other admin duties that arise from time to time.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Providing project support, including administrative, secretarial and other office duties
  • Provide support for our various community development programs and services
  • Participating in project related special events, focus groups, and managing related logistics
  • Maintaining and monitoring information and statistics for project management and reporting
  • Assisting with photocopying, e-mailing and faxing, etc.
  • Keeping daily log and recording statistics of contacts made, incoming mails, volunteer & staff attendance records
  • Preparing, receiving and sending-out mails, typing meeting minutes, preparing correspondence and helping in special event committees
  • Assisting in answering and monitoring the telephones, voice mail messages, and general office duties
  • Preparing presentations and training materials for our numerous programs and services.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Computer literacy and the ability to type at least 50 WPM
  • Must have excellent verbal, listening and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to interact with volunteers, clients and the general public
  • Must possess sound computer and internet knowledge
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to multitask in a fast – paced environment

Addiction Counsellor

Job description

The Addiction Counsellor will work closely with the project team to identify and provide counseling and care coordination services to individuals with lived and living experiences of substance use. The Addiction Counsellor will provide culturally safe care to individuals at risk of overdose and develop partnerships with community partners to reduce risk.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Screening and assessment to ensure the most appropriate interventions are offered to the client
  • Responsible for providing appropriate assessment and treatment interventions to individuals with lived and living experience of substance use
  • Provides referrals to other services
  • Provide support in the conduct of peer support training programs and weekly drop-in workshops

Qualifications:            

  • A University degree in a relevant area of health-related discipline along with formal post-graduate training in addiction counseling
  • Three years of relevant experience in providing services to individuals who live with an addiction issue
  • Ability to provide support in group and individual settings, assessment, supportive counseling, and referral in the field of addictions and harm reduction
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply addictions evidence-based practices and procedures as they relate to individuals who live with substance use concerns, within a client-centered approach
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making skills
  • Ability to effectively utilize community resources and supports to meet the needs of clients
  • Ability to work under pressure within a changing environment
  • Working knowledge on the various harm reduction practices and models
  • Working knowledge of the Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, and other relevant legislation

IT Assistant

Job description

HSDC is looking for a part time IT assistant who will help us with the installation, operation and maintenance of computer systems and other technologies including communication systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and configure equipment including individual computers
  • Trouble shoot hardware and software on computers, perform routine maintenance and correct minor technical problems
  • Perform routine maintenance and software updates for performance efficiency
  • Trouble shooting internet connections, server problems and program issues
  • Setting up wireless connection/networking
  • Assist in maintaining internet service, firewalls and telephone systems
  • Handling other technical issues

Qualifications:

  • Certificate, diploma or degree in computer science, related IT field or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in IT technical field
  • Have experience with computer hardware and software set-up
  • Familiarity with a variety of hardware (i.e. laptops, projectors, printers, fax machine, etc.)
  • Have a working knowledge of Windows operating system
  • Team player with the ability to work with all levels of management and staff
  • Ability to convey technical issues to non-technical people

Sewing Instructor

Job description

HSDC is currently seeking a skilled Sewing Instructor to teach on a part-time basis, intermediate and advanced practical sewing course at our center.

Candidate should be available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach sewing and dress-making course to a small group of participants twice a week
  • Assisting participants with sewing-related questions and providing industrial information
  • Teaching the group the various ways of maintaining their sewing machines

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Must have successfully completed any Fashion Design Diploma or Sewing Training Program
  • Must have minimum five (5) years sewing experience
  • Skilled in advanced sewing technologies
  • Experience in draft making, patterns, etc.
  • Adult teaching experience would be an asset.

Skills needed:

  • Good communication/interpersonal and group management skills
  • In-depth knowledge of silhouettes, sketching & fit, color selections and fabrics
  • Should be flexible, patient, tolerant, and compassionate

Computer Instructor

Job description

HSDC is looking for a dedicated individual with excellent knowledge and experience in computer and MS office applications; MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, MS Outlook and Internet etc., to teach in-person Basic and Advanced computer training to the community.

Candidate should be available Mondays & Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Teach students using a systematic plan of lectures, demonstrations, assignments
  • Prepare, administer and mark tests and papers to evaluate students’ progress
  • Provide individualized tutorial/remedial instructions
  • Supervise independent or group projects and hands-on training
  • May help revise curriculum and prepare teaching materials and outlines for courses
  • Have working knowledge of Windows operating systems
  • Be able to work independently, and with instructions
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software systems and programs
  • Have great verbal, presentation and listening communication skills
